Cops: Man Robbed Southport Liquor Store at Knifepoint [UPDATED]

The suspect was taken into custody was he allegedly attempted to flee in a vehicle, police said.

A man who allegedly robbed a Southport liquor store at knifepoint was detained by police Thursday as he attempted to flee in a vehicle, police said.

Just after 1:30 p.m., the Fairfield Police Department received a report of a robbery at Pequot Liquor Post on the Post Road in Southport. According to the complainant, a man had stolen cash and cigarettes while "brandishing" a knife, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said.

The complainant also told police that the suspect had left the store and was in the area of Post Road and Pease Avenue near a white van.

Police officers headed to the scene. Officer Newkirchen spotted a man attempting to gain entry into a vehicle stopped at a red light on Pease Avenue and Post Road. Responding officers took the suspect into custody before he could flee in the vehicle, recovered the stolen cash, and seized the man's knife.

The suspect was identified as Marc Gaus, 39, of Migeon Avenue in Torrington,  was charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree threatening. He was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 19.
