Fight at Stop & Shop, three arrests

Three local men were arrested at Super Stop & Shop Saturday Aug. 13 after a fist fight occurred between them.

According to police, at around 4:30 p.m., Larry Bivens, 45, of 58 Roseville Street, Fairfield, entered the store, at 760 Villa Ave., to buy cigarettes. He acted very impatiently and got into words with the clerk, Richard Cruz, 21, of Bridgeport. Cruz put Bivens in a headlock. At that moment, Bivens’ brother, Timothy, 44, also of Roseville Street, rushed over and grabbed Cruz.

Each of the three was arrested, charged with disorderly conduct and released on a promise to appear in court Aug. 22.

Couple’s spat leads to misdemeanor summons

A couple’s argument late afternoon Saturday Aug. 13 led to the arrest of the husband on domestic violence charges and the issuance of a motor vehicle-related misdemeanor summons against the wife.

According to police, a third party called around 5:30 p.m. to report a couple fighting in and around a car in the presence of two young children, ages 3 and 4. Police located the husband, Donte Cobb, 32, of Bridgeport, near Exit 25 off I-95 and Coolidge and Commerce Drive. Cobb said he and his wife, Maryann Bember, 28, of Kentwood, MI, had argued over her not wanting to go to a picnic and she kicked him out of the car. Bember was located in Bridgeport and when interviewed about the incident, she said that Cobb had been drinking all day, grabbed her around the neck causing her to gasp, threatened the lives of their children and tried to grab the keys out of the ignition.

Bember, who had red marks on her neck and arms but refused medical attention, was issued a summons for misuse of a plate, no insurance and operating without a registration. She will appear in court August 23. Cobb was arrested on charges that included two counts of injury/risk/impairing the morals of a minor, disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and third-degree strangulation. He posted bond, was released from custody and was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 15.

Arrest in street sign theft

A Middletown, CT man was arrested for sixth-degree larceny Monday Aug. 15 after stealing a street sign from the corner of Crane Street and Old Stratfield.

According to police, a group of kids was seen roaming Crane Street. They were connected to a vehicle that contained the street sign. Michael Sullivan, 18, was identified as the perpetrator and admitted to the theft. He told police he wanted to give the sign to his girlfriend, who lives on Stratfield Road. The sign is valued around $800. Sullivan was released on a promise to appear in court Aug. 22.

Arrest after disturbance at 55 Degrees Wine Bar

A Westport man was arrested at midnight Saturday Aug. 13 after causing a disturbance at 55 Degrees, 55 Miller Street.

According to police, management reported that Juan Benitez, 39, took his shirt off, urinated in a trash container and punched walls. He refused to leave then began shouting obscenities at an off-duty police officer who was on the scene. When uniformed officers appeared, Benitez shouted at them, “You think you guys can do anything,” and refused to give them his i.d.

Benitez was arrested for breach of peace and issued a court date of Aug. 19.

Underwear nicked from Victoria’s Secret

A New York woman was arrested around 2:45 p.m. after stealing underwear from the Victoria’s Secret at 1499 Post Road.

According to police, Yuleika Lebron Rey, 30, entered the store with a booster bag and filled it with $879 worth of merchandise. The manager had seen Rey enter with the bag empty, then full, after Rey visited a display. The manager checked the drawers in the area where Rey was shopping and they were empty. Rey left the store and headed eastbound on foot. A witness reported seeing her throw the bag under a car. Officers detained her less than 100 yards from the car and she was positively identified by the store manager. The merchandise was returned to the store and Rey, who has a long criminal history, was arrested for fifth-degree larceny and possession of a shoplifting device. She was issued a $2500 bond and court date of Aug. 19.
