Driver 'Lucky' to Escape Car Fire Unscathed

The car was fully engulfed in flames by the time Fairfield fire fighters got to the scene on I-95 in Southport.

Fairfield fire officials say the driver of a Volkswagon Golf is "very lucky" to have escaped injury when the vehicle suddenly erupted in flames Sunday.

The incident — reported shortly after noon — led to the closure of the exit 19 off ramp on Interstate 95 northbound for about an hour while firefighters were on scene. The Westport Fire Department assisted, by protecting the scene on the heavily traveled highway while crews from Fairfield put the fire out.

According to Assistant Chief Scott Bisson, the 2013 Volkswagon Golf had an estimated $20,000 in damage.
