Early Morning Blaze Erupts on Black Rock Turnpike

The affected property is 1565 Black Rock Turnpike.

Fairfield firefighters responded to an early morning blaze on Black Rock Turnpike Thursday.

A witness called a report of smoke coming from the plaza at 1565 Black Rock Turnpike, where the Beans & Leaves tobacco shop is located.

Five engines and two ladder companies arrived on scene to find a working fire at Beans & Leaves. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the building.

After the blaze was contained, firefighters checked the adjoining Turkish Grill restaurant and found that the fire did not extend into the eatery.

Assistant Chief William Kessler is investigating the cause of the fire.

"The property owner is diligently working with business owners to reopen this weekend," Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir said.
