Fairfield Firefighters Pull Floating Bathroom from Pine Creek [Photos]

The bathroom became detached from a Fairfield Beach Road home that was damaged in the hurricane.

Fairfield emergency responders on Wednesday morning helped rescue a bathroom that apparently detached from its house due to Hurricane Irene damage and started floating upstream in Pine Creek with the rising tide.

No one was in the bathroom at the time and nobody at the residence it was belonged to, 2154 Fairfield Beach Road, was injured, according to a press release from Fairfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Chris Tracy.

“Fire crews led by Lt. Bill Tuttle remain on scene with DPW Machine Operator Ed Hoffman [is] clearing the remaining debris,” Tracy said in his release.

At 8:41 a.m., the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a report of the floating six-by-six-foot structure, called in by Fairfield Police Lt. Tom Mrozek. Responding units included Fairfield Fire Department Engine 1, Ladder 1 and Cars 1, 3 and 5 responded along with Police, Public Works, Engineering and Building Department officials.

By 1 p.m., fire and DPWS personnel had secured and were removing the structure.

The home, one of several that suffered extensive damage during Irene, is located on a street that forms a peninsula into the Long Island Sound and saw several houses into the water during the storm.
