A Fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence early Sunday after his car reportedly struck the rear of another vehicle at the intersection of Jennings Road and High Street, police said.

Andrew Hernandez, 31, of High Street told police he swerved because of a raccoon he saw in the street, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said. The vehicle he hit -- which was parked and unoccupied -- hit a utility pole.

No major injuries were reported, but Hernandez’s 9-year-old daughter -- who was in the passenger seat -- was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for evaluation. Hernandez told police he had taken prescription medication and was on the way home from a party, according to the report.

Police described Hernandez as lethargic and slurring his words. He failed three field sobriety tests and was detained, according to the report.
