A Fairfield resident interrupted a possible drug deal on Halley Avenue on Thursday, police said.
The resident noticed a black car drive down to the end of the dead-end street and hide a bag. The car drove off and the neighbor, sensing something suspicious was going on, went to check out what was in the bag.
The bag contained what appeared to be smaller baggies of marijuana. The complainant hid the bag in a drainage culvert and walked away, according to police.
Three men shortly returned to the area. The resident witnessed a hand-to-hand exchange and then saw the men begin to look for something, according to the complainant. They were rummaging through the mulch, then left, then returned a short while later to look again.
The resident called police after the men left and turned over 18 bags of marijuana to the department. This is under investigation.
