Family Pet Saved From Fairfield House Fire

Firefighters encountered smoke coming from every floor of the house on arrival and were told by a neighbor that the young couple that lives there might be trapped inside.

Fairfield firefighters rescued a small dog from a house fire at 186 Shiller Road at 2:12 p.m. Sunday.

According to a report from Assistant Chief George Gomola of the , firefighters encountered smoke coming from every floor of the house on arrival and were told by a neighbor that the young couple that lives there might be trapped inside.

Fairfield firefighters entered the smoke-filled house to conduct a search rescue. While inside they found the small dog — a family pet — and determined that the owners were not home.

All town firefighting apparatus were deployed to quickly knock down the fire, which originated in the basement, according to the report.

"Heavy smoke and fire damage was experienced in the basement, but thanks to the quick work of the fire crews damage on the first and second floors was limited," Gomola's report states. The last fire unit left the scene at 4:45 p.m.
Gomola added that the homeowners "expressed sincere gratitude for the work of the firefighters in saving their home and rescuing their dog."

“If the fire had not been reported quickly by an observant neighbor the outcome would have been very different, especially for the family pet,” Gomola said.

The report does not state whether the home had . The cause of the fire is reportedly under investigation by Fire Marshal Bill Kessler.
