Firefighter Treated for Exposure to Chemicals Following Hazmat Incident

Early morning incident closed Commerce Drive for several hours.

A Fairfield firefighter was reportedly treated for exposure to chemical fumes at Bridgeport Hospital early this morning after responding to a hazardous materials emergency at MCP Metalspecialties, 515 Commerce Drive.

According to reports, when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after midnight, they encountered a noxious cloud resulting from a chemical reaction. Hazmat teams, as well as personnel from the state Department of Environmental Protection, were reportedly called in to assist.

The incident reportedly closed Commerce Drive to traffic for several hours.

Firefighters worked with employees of MCP Metalspecialties to identify the chemical process that had gone awry, according to a Fairfield Citizen report. Firefighters used sophisticated equipment to check for the presence of hazardous materials, the report states.

The firefighter who was treated has reportedly returned to duty, the report states.
