I-95 Accident in Fairfield Causes Truck to Release Fuel, Debris [Updated]

Both lanes of traffic are affected. Expect major delays for some time.

The Connecticut Post reports that four people were sent to the hospital for minor injuries resulting from this afternoon's accident on I-95 northbound near exit 24.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is on scene supervising cleanup of the fuel spilled from the truck overturned during the incident, according to the report.

Debris released from the truck after it collided with the vehicle included concrete pavers, some of which landed on the southbound lane and caused delays, the Post reports.

State police spokesperson Lt. J Paul Vance told the Post it could take until 6 p.m. to clear the scene on the northbound side of the highway. Traffic remained backed up at the beginning of rush hour; the affected southbound lanes had been reopened at 4 p.m., according to the report.

Update, 3:42 p.m.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation reported via its Breaking News Network system that the fuel released from the overturned truck on I-95 is leaking beyond the highway and into the environment.

A vacuum truck has been requested to clean up the spill.

According to DoingItLocal.com, four were injured in the accident. Updates to come as they are made available.

Original Story, 3:18 p.m.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation reported around 2:45 p.m. this afternoon an accident that has affected both lanes of traffic on I-95 on the Fairfield/Bridgeport line.

According to alerts from the state’s Breaking News Network, a tractor trailer truck collided with a vehicle on I-95 southbound between exits 24 and 23. The truck, which was overturned, is spilling fuel onto the highway and let fly debris into the northbound lanes.

The left lane is closed on I-95 south and the left and center lanes are closed on I-95 north. State police and Fairfield emergeny crews are responding; there are no reports of injuries at this time.

This is the second that has occurred in within the town's borders in a week.
