A Bridgeport man was charged Wednesday with sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police after he allegedly tried to shoplift from BJ's on Black Rock Turnpike and then ran off, engaging officers in a foot pursuit.
According to the police report, Jose Fontanez, 36, left BJ's with $83 worth of Dove body wash, which he did not pay for. Officers told Fontanez in the parking lot to stop, but he allegedly ran off into the woods adjacent to Black Rock Turnpike, police said.
Fontanez was found riding a bike on Commerce Drive and was positively identified by the BJ's store manager as the suspect who allegedly stole the body wash, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said.
He was released after posting a $250 bond and Oct. 9.
