Motorcyclist Dies Following Late-Night Merritt Crash in Fairfield

Paramedics' attempts to revive 25-year-old male after collision with car driven by Fairfield woman unsuccessful, officials say.

Motorcyclist dies in collision with car

The Fairfield Police Department’s Office of Public Affairs reported this morning that the motorcyclist involved in a collision with a car at around 11 p.m. last night near the intersection of Black Rock Turnpike and Congress Street has died.

According to Sgt. Suzanne Lussier, the operator of the motorcycle was a 25-year-old male from Massachusetts. He suffered severe injuries in a collision with a car driven by a Fairfield woman, who sustained only minor injuries. When paramedics arrived on the scene, the man was in cardiac arrest. Advance treatment to revive him was attempted, said Lussier, as he was being transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport. The man died as a result of his injuries however. The time of death was not available.

Lussier said that investigators conducted a preliminary review of the scene last night, and impounded both vehicles, bringing them to police headquarters at 100 Reef Road. A search warrant for both vehicles has been requested.

With regard to vehicle condition, Lussier said the left front door of the car was damaged.

The intersection, near Exit 44 of the Merritt Parkway, where the accident occurred is heavily traveled, police said. The road was closed temporarily and the deceased’s family has been notified.

Patient’s personal items missing from CT Health of Southport

A woman that had been a patient at CT Health of Southport reported early afternoon Thursday that jewelry had gone missing.

According to police, as she was packing up to leave the facility, after a three to four month stay, she noticed that two rings and a bracelet, valued at $3,000, were missing. Administrators said that the jewelry had been taken for safekeeping due to the woman’s condition. The patient requested the return of the items several times. It was not clear why her request was not heeded, where the items were being kept or what has become of them. The incident is under further investigation.

Credit card fraud claimed

The homeowner at 22 Barry Scott Drive reported Thursday afternoon that unauthorized charges were made to her Discover Card.

According to police, the woman got a call from Best Buy wanting to verify a $2,000 charge for a camera to her card. The camera was supposed to have been mailed to a supplied address. The woman subsequently cancelled her card. Police are further investigating.

Credit card scam

The homeowner at 15 Gilbert Highway reported late afternoon Thursday that she was a victim of credit card fraud after a phone interaction with a man who identified himself as “Burt” and offered a gift card.

According to police, the caller asked the woman for credit card information in return for a promise that he would provide a gift card for $100. The woman gave him a credit card number but did not give him a security code. Police said it did not appear that any charges had been made to the card and are further investigating.

Man arrested after assaulting child

A Fairfield man was arrested mid-morning Thursday after an investigation confirmed that he had assaulted one of his three minor children.

According to police, an investigation, with the collaboration of the Dept. of Children and Family, was launched Sept. 9 into a report by the man’s ex-wife of injuries their biological child, the custody of whom they share jointly, had sustained. Charles Toth, 44, of 341 Fairland Drive, was arrested at police headquarters for risking injury to a minor and third-degree assault.

Toth was held on a $50,000 bond and delivered to court today.
