Interstate 95 southbound is closed in New York where it intersects with I-287 in Harrison. The New York State Thruway Authority says all southbound traffic is being diverted at exit 21 onto the Cross Westchester Expressway.

It's unknown when the highway will reopen.

The closure is the result of an early morning bus crash at I-95 exit 14 in New York that resulted in 13 fatalities and eight critically injured.

The bus was traveling from the Mohegan Sun casino to New York's Chinatown when the accident occurred on the Westchester County-Bronx border at about 5:30 am.

The bus driver told authorities the bus was clipped by a tractor trailer, causing it to flip onto its side, according to the Associated Press. A thick steel column holding up an exit sign then sliced it in half lengthwise. Police are searching for the driver of the tractor trailer, which did not stop, according to a state police spokesperson.

The bus was operated by World Wide Tours.

In New York, all lanes are blocked on I-95 southbound between exits 14 and 15. Traffic is being diverted off the highway at Exit 18A/18B -- Mamaroneck Ave./Fenimore Rd. -- according to the New York State Thruway Authority.

The National Transportation Safety Board has announced it has dispatched a team of investigators to the accident scene.
