Police Arrest Former Head Cashier at Bank Who 'Borrowed' $15,400 After He Was Fired

Charged With Second-Degree Larceny

The ex-head cashier at HSBC, a bank on the Post Road in Fairfield, who allegedly "borrowed" $15,400 after he was fired on April 30 was arrested Friday on a warrant charging him with second-degree larceny.

Police said Frederick Applewhite Jr., 25, of Ridgewood Place in Bridgeport, was held in lieu of $5,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear Sept. 7 in Bridgeport Superior Court. Police said Applewhite turned himself in at the Fairfield Police Department Friday morning after learning there was a warrant for his arrest.

Applewhite allegedly stole $15,400 from the bank after he was fired, and, when the bank's operations manager noticed the missing money and called his cell phone to say he had two hours to return it, sent the operations manager a text message in which he stated: "I borrowed $15,400. I promise to bring it back Monday." Monday would have been May 3.

Applewhite's cash drawer should have had $122,700 but only had $107,364, according to police.

Police said Applewhite had been an employee at HSBC since 2006 and was its head cashier since April 1. It wasn't clear why Applewhite was fired.
