Motor Vehicle Break-in at Train Station; Bicycle Stolen; Burglary on Wheeler Park Avenue; DUI Arrest; Arrest for Vandalizing Car

The Fairfield Police Department's press briefing today included the following cases:

A GPS unit valued at $200 was reported stolen from a car parked on the north side of the Fairfield Railroad Station sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 7:20 p.m. Thursday. Entry was gained by smashing a front, passenger-side window, police said.

A road bike locked on a rack at the north side of the Fairfield Railroad Station was reported stolen sometime between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Both the lock and bike were missing, police said.

A 46-inch flat-screen TV valued at $1,700, a laptop computer valued at $550 and a DVD player valued at $200 were reported stolen from a house on Wheeler Park Avenue in Fairfield sometime on Thursday afternoon. Entry was gained by disabling a locking mechanism, and the burglary was reported to police about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. Police said the burglar is known to the homeowner.

A 21-year-old Fairfield motorist was arrested on a driving under the influence charge early today after police received a tip about a motorist driving recklessly by the corner of Post and Unquowa roads in downtown Fairfield.

Gregory Overfield, of Limerick Road, also was charged with traveling unreasonably fast, police said.

Police said a patrol officer caught up to Overfield on Mill Plain Road in Fairfield, by Riverfield School, and that Overfield was driving more than 60 mph. Overfield failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Overfield was released on $100 bond and is scheduled to appear July 19 in Bridgeport Superior Court, police said.

A 25-year-old Fairfield man accused of causing about $5,000 damage to a car parked on Knapps Highway in Fairfield during a vandalism incident early today was arrested.

Nicholas Johnston, of Sawyer Road, was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and breach of peace. He was held in lieu of $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear July 16 in Bridgeport Superior Court, police said.

Police said Johnston broke windows and taillights on a 2006 Nissan Ultima and dented its door panels about 3:50 a.m. Johnston was found hiding in bushes across the street, police said.

Police said it wasn't clear why Johnston vandalized the car.
