Kayaks set free at marina

A fisherman reported to police late Thursday that a group of kids was untying kayaks at South Benson Marina in Fairfield.

Police said the prank is dangerous because emergency responders, if they see or receive a report of a kayak floating in the water, will assume the kayak's owners may be in the water. Kayaks floating in the water also pose a danger to motorboat operators, and the owner of the kayak may not recover it, police said.

"There are several things at play here - all negative," said Police Lt. James Perez, a department spokesman.

The fisherman reported the incident at 11:34 p.m., police said.

Man charged with stealing soda and blueberry bushes

A 40-year-old Stratford man was charged Thursday night with stealing a 12-pack of Dr. Pepper and two blueberry bushes from Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue in Fairfield.

Evan Driscoll, who police said lives on Mill River Drive in Stratford, was charged with sixth-degree larceny after a patrol officer spotted him pushing a shopping carriage on Tunxis Hill Road in Fairfield about 8:59 p.m. The soda and blueberry bushes were valued at a total of $234, police said.

Driscoll was released on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court July 13, police said.
