A Fairfield Taxi cab driver and three juveniles were arrested Tuesday after the cabbie purchased alcohol on their behalf, police said.

According to the police report, two off-duty police officers saw Joseph Sistrunk Jr., 55, of Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, purchase three 12-packs of Bud Light beer from That’s the Spirit Shoppe on Fairfield Beach Road. The purchase seemed suspicious to the officers and they watched Sistrunk as he left the store and saw him pass the alcohol to three of four 15-year-old boys in his cab, police said.

The boys stepped out of the cab with the beer and Sistrunk left the scene, driving north up Reef Road, police said. The officers arrested the juveniles and radioed headquarters to have on-duty officers pursue the cab driver, who was stopped and arrested at the corner of Sasco Hill Road and Post Road, police said.

Police said Sistrunk had picked up the boys at Mercado Market in Greenfield Hill and brought them down to the Beach Area. The boys paid Sistrunk $30, though the fare was only $9, and Sistrunk agreed to buy the alcohol on their behalf, police said.

Sistrunk was charged with illegal delivery of liquor to a minor and risk of injury to a minor. He was released on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court July 19.

The three juveniles, who were from Norwalk, New Canaan and Fairfield, were each charged with possession of alcohol by a minor and were scheduled to appear in court on varying dates, according to police.
