Police Blotter for March 21: Rash of Thefts From Unlocked Motor Vehicles

Thefts From Seven Unlocked Motor Vehicles; Trespassing Arrest at Fairfield U.; Shoplifting Arrests at Kohl's; Motor Vehicle Stop Ends in Drug Arrest; Shoplifting Arrest at Stop & Shop on KHC; Warrant Arrest in Attempted Burglary at School

The Fairfield Police Department's press briefing on Monday included the following cases. Arrest information does not indicate a conviction.

Seven unlocked motor vehicles in Fairfield were entered over the weekend and a variety of goods were stolen.

A GPS unit valued at $180 and a DVD player valued at $100 were reported stolen from an unlocked car parked on Melville Avenue sometime between 3 p.m. Friday and 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Police said the car was parked on the street in front of the victim's house and that the theft was reported at 12:12 p.m. Saturday.

A GPS unit valued at $300 and sunglasses valued at $300 were reported stolen from an unlocked car parked in a driveway on Melville Avenue sometime between noon Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday. An owner's manual to the car and an insurance card also were stolen, police said. The theft was reported at 1:57 p.m. Saturday.

A laptop computer of unknown value, along with a power cord, mouse and miscellaneous accessories for the computer, were reported stolen from a car at some point during the day on Thursday. Police said the victim told officers she had the computer in a bag in the car while she drove around town on errands between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday and that it was gone when she got home. There was no sign of forced entry to the car and the victim said she may have left it unlocked while she was in stores. The theft was reported to police at 3:26 p.m. Saturday, police said.

A GPS unit valued at $200 was reported stolen from an unlocked car parked in a driveway on Lakeview Drive sometime between 9 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said registration paperwork for the car and an owner's manual also were stolen and that another unlocked car parked in the driveway had an owner's manual and registration information stolen during the same timeframe. The theft was reported to police at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

A GPS unit valued at $500 was reported stolen from an unlocked car parked in a driveway on Short Hill Lane sometime between midnight and 10 a.m. Sunday. The theft was reported to police at 10:58 a.m., police said.

A digital camera valued at $500, a hockey helmet valued at $200 and shoulder pads valued at $200 were reported stolen from an unlocked Jeep parked in a driveway on First Street sometime between 9 p.m. Sunday and 6:57 a.m. Monday.

A 21-year-old Colorado man who had been warned by police and Fairfield University security to stay off the university's campus was arrested early Friday on a charge of first-degree criminal trespass.

Police said Ronald Waters, of Fort Collins, was warned to stay off campus at 2:10 a.m. Friday and was found back on campus, at Jogues Hall dormitory, at 4:50 a.m.

Waters was held in lieu of $250 bond, police said. His court date was not available.

Two Bridgeport women were arrested Friday afternoon after they allegedly stole merchandise from Kohl's, a department store on Tunxis Hill Road in Fairfield.

Police said Roinna Young, 32, of Beardsley Street, and Kimberly Higgs, 27, of Deacon Street, concealed a total of $433 in merchandise, including shoes, underwear, bath towels, bath bars, a bath mat, bath curtains and picture frames, and tried to leave the store. The women concealed the goods in large bags, police said.

Young and Higgs were detained by a loss prevention officer at Kohl's until officers arrived about 4:07 p.m., police said. Young and Higgs were each charged with sixth-degree larceny and were each released on a promise to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court March 25, police said.

A 27-year-old Trumbull woman was arrested on drug charges early Saturday after a police officer pulled over the car in which she was a passenger because it had crossed the double-yellow lines on the Post Road by the Fairfield-Bridgeport border, police said.

Leia Scinto, of Rempsen Street, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said she admitted owning three glass pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana - two in the center console and another in her purse, police said - and a small baggie of marijuana in the center console.

Scinto was released after posting $100 bond, police said. Her court date was not available. The driver was not charged after the 2:36 a.m. traffic stop, police said.

A 35-year-old Bridgeport man accused of leaving Super Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff in Fairfield with $534 worth of unpaid merchandise was arrested on a charge of fifth-degree larceny Saturday afternoon.

Police said Carlos Clemente, of Grand Street, was pushing unbagged merchandise in a shopping cart out of the supermarket about 5:30 p.m. He was detained by a loss prevention officer after he couldn't produce a receipt for the goods, police said.

Clemente was released on $50 bond and was scheduled to appear April 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court, police said. Clemente told officers he was going to trade the merchandise, which wasn't specified by police, for Percocet, a painkiller, police said.

A 36-year-old Stamford man accused of trying to break into Stratfield School in August was arrested Friday in a warrant that charged him with criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary.

Police said Erick Brown, of Milton Street, attempted to steal alarm wire and copper ground rods from the elementary school on Melville Avenue in Fairfield, which was under construction at the time.

Officers had responded to an alarm at the school at 1:27 a.m. Aug. 13, police said.

Brown was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on March 31, police said.

A package delivered by FedEx that contained wedding invitations valued at $1,600 was reported stolen from a front porch on Mill Plain Road in Fairfield sometime between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The theft was reported to police at 11:07 a.m. Saturday.

A bicycle valued at $120 was reported stolen from a driveway on Warwick Avenue in Fairfield sometime between 3:50 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. Saturday.

A wallet containing $120 and credit cards was removed from a handbag in a shopping carriage at Super Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff in Fairfield sometime between 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.

A racing bike valued at $4,000 and a mountain bike valued at $250 were reported stolen from a garage on Collingwood Avenue in Fairfield sometime between March 6 and March 12. The thefts were reported to police at 7:20 p.m. Sunday. Police said the homeowner reported that the garage door was broken and sometimes stayed open.

A wallet containing $20, credit cards and a driver's license was reported stolen from an unlocked locker at Planet Fitness on lower Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield sometime between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Police said the credit cards had been used to pay for $400 worth of charges at Bertucci's, a restaurant in Westport, and a $13 charge at a McDonald's on Interstate 95 in Darien.

Police said officers obtained a description of the suspect from staff at Bertucci's and that the suspect is a white man, about five feet, six inches tall, about 165 pounds, with dark hair and dark eyes and in his late 30s or early 40s.

The theft was reported to police at 7:26 p.m. Friday.
