Police Investigate Weekend Crash That Killed Fairfield U Senior

Fairfield police continue to investigate the early Saturday morning car crash that killed a Fairfield University senior a day before graduation.

Deandre Lawton, 21, died from injuries sustained in the one-car accident on North Benson Road at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The car he was driving struck a tree near Fairfield University's main entrance, according to the police report.

The crash was reported by a passerby. Lawton was transported to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident's cause has yet to be determined, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said. The vehicle was towed to police headquarters to be processed by investigators.

Lawton -- a Brockton, Mass. native -- was due to graduate from the university's Charles F. Dolan School of Business on Sunday.

"The tragedy has shaken the entire community and all are profoundly saddened by the loss of a valued member of the Fairfield family," school officials stated in a release on Saturday.

"All in the Fairfield community are invited to prayer for Deandre, his family and friends."
