Fairfield police have arrested a man dubbed the "Basement Bandit," who they believe is responsible for a rash of burglaries in the town's Stratfield neighborhood.

Nicholas Kulish, 25, of Madison Avenue of Bridgeport, is accused of burglarizing homes on Putting Green Road, Bennett Street, Brooklawn Parkway, and Davis Road during the months of February and March, police said.

Det. Sgt. Tony Granata and Dets. Alex Fucci and Peter Koval developed Kulish as a suspect after several surveillance operations in the Stratfield section of town. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Kulish's residence, where they found jewelry and other items reported missing after the burglaries, according to the report. The victims subsequently identified the recovered items.

"This is an example of the great work our burglary detectives have been doing," Police Chief Gary MacNamara said. "Their dedication and perseverance in tracking this individual down has prevented further burglaries."

Kulish was charged with six counts of third-degree burglary, eight counts of third-degree larceny, and two counts of first-degree larceny. He has been incarcerated on other charges since April, but is being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond in connection to this investigation.

The Burglary Squad will continue investigating his involvement in other burglaries in the Stratfield area during the same time frame, but it is safe to say the basement burglary spree is over," Lt. Michael Gagner said.
