Police Warn of UI Phone Scam

Someone claiming to be a United Illuminating representative attempted to scam Spic and Span Market, police said.

The owner of Spic and Span Market in Southport reported a phone scam to police Tuesday.

An employee received a phone call from someone claiming to be a United Illuminating representative, who said that the Pequot Avenue grocer owed UI an invoice. The caller said Spic and Span had to pay up or the power would be shut off.

The caller told the employee to go to Walgreens, RiteAid, or Walmart and purchase an express bill money package, but did not say where to send the package, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said.
