Report: Fairfield Man Kills Self in Standoff with Police [Update]

Police initially responded to a domestic dispute call at Fairfield Gardens on Saturday.

[Update 1:45 p.m.]

Police have reportedly identified the man who commited suicide late Saturday at Fairfield Gardens following a three-hour long standoff as 40-year-old Douglas Garni.

According to an updated report in the CT Post, citing statements made by police, Garni barricaded himself in a unit of the Colonial Gardens Condominiums at about 7:30 p.m., after he threatened his girlfriend.

His girlfriend reportedly managed to escape to a nearby condo and called police, informing them that Garni had several registered firearms.

According to the report, a single gunshot was heard from a wooded area just north of Garni's condo at about 11 p.m. Garni's body was reportedly found in the wooded area.

[Original report:]

A man killed himself with a shot to the head late Saturday at Fairfield Gardens condominium following a standoff with police, the Connecticut Post reports.

The man had threatened to kill his girlfriend earlier in the evening, leading to an evacuation of the complex, according to the report.

The woman had escaped the complex and called police around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, after the man had hit her in the head with a gun, according to the Post.

A single gunshot was heard at about 10:55 p.m. and Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara told the press that the standoff was over at around 11:15 p.m., according to the report.

It was legally owned, as the story says. Doug was an EMT and a great person. I don't know why he did this

It's disgusting how people like you can't wait to twist this to suit your agenda. His body isn't even cold yet and he has loved ones who I'm sure are mourning this tragic loss. If he hadn't had a gun, this poor guy would have ended his life another way.
rottyfan February 25, 2013 at 12:36 AM
sister sarah, thank you for revealing your true, vile self. Doug was a son, a brother, and a father, and you behave so disgracefully by slithering on here and posting such an insensitive, anti-gun comment.
Sandra February 25, 2013 at 03:45 AM
Steven- isn't it more important to take a moment to mourn his loss at this moment? He was obviously troubled and if had taken his life in a less "violent" manner does that change anything for him or his loved ones?

Let us hope that the words of a tin god are not heard by those who regret the passing of the deceased. May God help those who die and those who mourn.

I might be biased but I'm not on here sticking my finger in anyone's eye to suit my goals. If, and I truly hope this never happens, your wife, girlfriend, mother, daughter, whoever was sexually assaulted, I wouldn't be on here saying "She should have had a gun!" No, I would be greatly saddened that she and her loved ones have to endure something so painful. There's a time and a place to share your opinion. The day after is NOT that time.

may he rest in peace. Connecticut Post should be ashamed of itself for is sophmoric reporting on this.

Why is it people who have such strong opinions are afraid to post their real name? It's pretty cowardly to lash out and not back it up with facts .. But then again if I had the intelligence of a slug I wouldn't want people to know who I am either.

All of you who are attacking this guy and you don't even know him. He was a human being a good person who tried hard to better his life. Sometimes people get themselves into situations that seem very hopeless at the time and they choose a way out. Who are any of you to stand in judgement of him?
R. Ludlowe February 25, 2013 at 11:02 PM
I know many who knew him and said he was a great person. Very sad. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

oh now he pistol whipped someone.. first off he never threatened his girlfriend, he threatened to commit suicide to his girlfriend. When people read what they want to read instead of what the story says (No where did it say "pistol whip") just shows their ignorance and shallow minds. Sad that the good onces leave this earth early and then those that waste space and air that do absolutely nothing in life but blame everyone else live long and are to stupid and ignorant to know they are losers.
Candace February 26, 2013 at 03:50 PM
From Gods lips, I hope this is some kind of joke. The words you are writing have nothing to do with God. You are the type of person that gives God a bad name. You should be ashamed of yourself. The God I know is loving and compassionate, a God that I know lovingly accepted Doug, regardless of his flaws. This is the same God that loves you, despite your hatred.
VivaCromwell February 26, 2013 at 03:53 PM
Wow some of you people are a disgrace to mankind. All you do is point fingers and blame others while pretending you are some sort of hero. Doug was a human being with a lot of love in him, his only child died of SIDS and was very hard on him, if anybody is an altruist it was Doug! He was also very intelligent and made a great effort to do his part beyond. So those of you so quick to judge, do us a favor and look at yourselves, stop perpetuating your ignorance / judgement when you havent a clue. It makes me sick to read such arrogance! .. And as far as the newspapers sensationalism to grab the latest headline? Whatever happened to the integrity of reporting a genuine piece with fact instead of negative BS to entertain while failing to inform the truth? This country is going down fast, yet what do you do other than point the finger and perpetuate ignorance. The fellow who demonstrated such courage by using an alias and calling Doug names, you're one of those this is addressed to. Doug was a good man, much better than the lot here! RIP Doug.

I hope that Patch comes through and cleans up some of these comments. regardless of your political and social opinions, this is not the forum to be grand-standing. Its pretty disgusting.
Sandra February 26, 2013 at 04:30 PM
The Patch has been disappointing lately.

Keep hiding behind your screen name coward... seems Doug must've bested you on more than one occasion, hurt feelings, resentments ? I am certain you got what you deserved. Although, doesn't seem like a difficult task.. with your comments, obviously you are not very bright.
