School Bus Gets Tangled Up in Cable

Middle School Students' Trip Home Delayed About 45 Minutes; Cable Had No Voltage; No Injuries, Emergency Responders Say

A school bus carrying about 20 middle school students was delayed about 45 minutes on Catamount Road in Fairfield Tuesday afternoon after its mirror became snagged on a fiber optic cable, police and firefighters said.

The cable, which became wrapped around the right, front side of the bus, didn't have any voltage and no one was injured, police said. United Illuminating workers and firefighters disentangled the cable from the bus, and the bus resumed its trip with students after about 45 minutes, said Assistant Fire Chief Stephen B. Curry.

"The bus driver did a great job maintaining calm and order on the bus," Curry said.

Curry said firefighters responded to the call about 3:22 p.m. and cleared the scene about 4:08 p.m.

Police diverted traffic away from the bus because Catamount Road is a winding road and a stopped school bus posed a traffic hazard, said Police Sgt. Sue Lussier. "If a car came around the corner, it'd be dangerous," she said.

Curry said firefighters used a meter to determine the wire had no electricity.
