State Trooper Hurt in Parkway Accident in Fairfield
State Police Sgt. Benedict Liberatore was reportedly stopping traffic to allow construction workers to work on the highway when his cruiser was struck from behind and pushed into the Jersey barrier.
A Connecticut state trooper was reportedly hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after his patrol car was struck from behind at a construction site on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
According to a release from the Fairfield Fire Department, as well as published reports, Sgt. Benedict Liberatore, 54, was stopping northbound traffic to allow construction crews to work on the highway when his cruiser was struck from behind and pushed into the Jersey barrier. The accident occurred near Burr Street.
According to reports, firefighters had to cut the roof from police cruiser in order to extricate Liberatore, who was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital with reported injuries to his legs and back.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Liberatore’s car, Gino Restaini, 68, of Wilton, was also taken to St. Vincent's with minor injuries, according to reports.
The accident, one of several in the past two months on the Merritt due to construction, is reportedly under investigation.
