[Update] Structure Fire Reported at Circle Diner

The Fairfield Fire Department reports some ignited mulch caused the smoke and potential fire earlier this morning.

Update, 2:29 p.m.

According to Assistant Chief Stephen Curry, an employee at the Circle Diner reported smoke in the building to the fire department. All employees and customers were evacuated.

Upon arrival, the responders noticed a heavy odor smoke -- "not quite visible," Curry said. It took some time to determine the source of the smoke.

The source turned out to be mulch that had ignited outside the restaurant, "probably by a cigarette butt," according to Curry. It ignited near a structural part of the diner, and smoke crept up into the attic -- thus, employees and customers smelled the smoke in the dining room.

The mulch fire resulted in very minor damage and "the diner is fully opened and serving food," Curry said.
