Suspect Arrested in This Morning's Gunfire at Fairfield Beach

Bridgeport Man Charged

A Bridgeport man was arrested this afternoon for firing a pistol five times into the air on Fairfield Beach Road early this morning.

Police said Alex Ortiz, 34, of French Street, was arrested late this afternoon at the Fairfield Police Department and charged with first-degree threatening, first-degree reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was released on $5,000 bond, pending an appearance in Bridgeport Superior Court.

The gunman had unnerved homeowners on Fairfield Beach Road when he allegedly put his hand outside a car and fired five shots into the air from a pistol after exchanging words with pedestrians. He sped off in a Mazda after the 12:55 a.m. incident, eluding a police perimeter that had been set up.

Residents, upset at the incident that took place behind the Seagrape Cafe, a longtime neighborhood bar frequented by university students who rent homes in the area, called police and First Selectman Ken Flatto's office this morning.

Before the arrest, police said they likely would hold a community meeting with Fairfield Beach homeowners to address their concerns.
