Thefts from Unlocked Vehicles Rule the Day

Multiple items taken in separate incidents

Crimes of opportunity

Multiple thefts from unlocked or unsecured vehicles were reported over the past twenty-four hours, an increasing yet preventable trend.

In the first incident, at the Fairfield Motor Inn, 417 Post Road, two children’s bikes were reported stolen this morning from a bike rack attached to the back of a car parked at the back of the inn. The bikes, a purple Mongoose valued at $100 and a BMX bike valued at $300, were last seen by their owner at 7 p.m. last night.

In a second incident, the homeowner at 232 Roselle Street reported yesterday afternoon that a Garmin GPS with charger, iPod and charger, sunglasses (valued at $30) and cell phone charger. The vehicle, a Land Rover Discovery, was unlocked and parked in the homeowner’s driveway.

In a third incident, the homeowner at 1052 Mill Plain Road reported Thursday evening that an American Express credit card and $60 in cash had been stolen from her unlocked car, parked in her drive, and that an attempt had been made to use the card at Trumbull Mall and Stop & Shop in Bridgeport. According to police, sometime between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday. An eyewitness said there were two suspicious persons in the area – a white male in his teens and white female, also in her teens. The incident is under further investigation.

In a related occurrence, a complainant that had been robbed yesterday morning at around 2:45 a.m., submitted a statement of loss to police that indicated three drill sets, valued overall at $600, had been among the missing items. The equipment was taken from an unlocked side compartment of the complainant’s truck.

A senior scammer strikes again 

An 81-year-old man reported yesterday afternoon that he had received a call that Publishers Clearing House was coming to the house to pick up $850.

According to police, after that initial call was received, the caller, described as having a foreign accent, contacted the elderly man again, this time to tell him to go the Western Union office at a local Wal-Mart and wire the money to a Calvin Emrick in California.

The officer that arrived on the scene, a home at 231 York Ave., to investigate, called the number back and talked to the male, who said, ‘You’re not John’, and swore.

Neighbor highly intoxicated, yelling profanities

A homeowner on Crane Street reported Thursday evening that his neighbor was highly intoxicated, standing on his front porch and yelling profanities in the direction of the complainant’s children. Officers on the scene confirmed a high level of intoxication, found the man unstable and slurring his speech. An ambulance was summoned and the man taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for observation.

Tenant alleges abuse and threatening behavior by landlord

A female tenant at 119 Churchill Street reported Thursday evening that her landlord had been harassing her, had verbally abused her and she doesn’t feel safe.

According to police, the tenant alleges that the landlord showed up announced at 8:30 a.m. and began yelling and getting close to her. She thought he was going to hit her but says he instead spat in her face, on her left cheek. She says she is afraid and wants to press charges. Officers tried to contact the landlord by phone – he had not returned calls as of the time of issuance of the police report.
