Update: Metro-North Service Restored, Back on Schedule

New Haven Line service is now operating on or close to schedule. "We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced as a result of this incident."

Metro-North reports that even though full service has been restored through the Fairfield Metro station, New Haven Line commuters can expect residual delays of one to two hours to continue.

Service was restored about 8:30 a.m. Friday nearly two hours after a suspicious package was found on an overpass near the train station.

Update 8:58 a.m:
The situation unfolded about 7:30 a.m. when a town worker noticed the suspicious package on his way to work and contacted Fairfield Police, according to a report on The Minuteman News Center.

Update 836 a.m.:
Metro-North just announced that "Service has resumed through Fairfield station. Police have completed their investigation. Residual delays of 1 to 2 hours can be expected."

According to a WCBS 880 radio report, the delays were caused by a "large bottle or jug left on the overpass of Unquowa Road which still remains closed to traffic" near the Fairfield Metro station.

WCBS Traffic reporter Tom Kaminski reported that police wearing rubber gloves were seen removing the item from the area.

Metro-North has announced that train delays of one to two hours are expected as police investigate a suspicious package reportedly found on Unquowa Road near a train station

A suspicious package discovered on Unquowa Road, near the Fairfield Metro-North station has resulted in the station being evacuated and train delays during the morning commute, according to reports.

WFSB-TV/NBC reported that the package found near the station resulted in the evacuation and possibly closure.

A bomb squad was at the scene, Fairfield police told the television station.

Metro-North announced at 7:16 a.m.:

"New Haven Line service is temporarily delayed for trains traveling through Fairfield station. Trains are restricted from traveling through this area while Police are investigating a suspicious package. We expect delays of 30 - 60 minutes at this time. Please listen for announcements at your station.
