Two Killed in New Year's Day I-95 Crash

and officials say two people were pronounced dead on the scene of a pre-dawn accident Sunday after a single vehicle shot over a guardrail on Interstate 95 northbound between exits 18 and 19.

According to Fairfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Stephen B. Curry, emergency responders received a call at about 3:35 a.m. of a vehicle that had left the roadway “and went over the guardrail continuing down a steep embankment through thick overgrowth and trees for approximately 100 feet before coming to rest on its roof.”

“The driver of the vehicle was sitting on the guardrail and immediately treated by Westport EMS and AMR Ambulance and transported to the hospital,” Curry said in a press release.

Three others remained in the vehicle, including two pronounced dead on scene, he said.

Westport and Fairfield fire officials extricated the remaining survivor and began treating that individual, Curry said.

“Once the doors were removed the patient was removed onto a backboard and into a stokes basket,” he said. “A mechanical advantage rope rigging system was put into place that was used to haul the patient up the embankment. The patient was loaded into the ambulance and transported by AMR to the hospital. The two remaining bodies were then extricated and removed up the embankment to the roadway and secured to await the arrival of the State Medical Examiner.”

State police are investigating, Curry said.
