Thirty-four bags of heroin were found at the scene of a car crash that occurred early Tuesday, police said.

A patrol officer observed a car driving at a high rate of speed along Kings Highway East, cross sideways over a median while turning onto Villa Avenue, and then strike a concrete wall along the shoulder of the road before coming to rest, according to the report.

Responding officers saw the man they believed to be the operator of the vehicle get out of the car, walk behind the trunk, and then return to the driver's seat.

When told he was observed going 100 mph in a 35 mph zone, the man reportedly replied, "I was only going, like, 80," according to police.

The man -- identified as Angel Luis Gabriel, 23, of Orchard Street in Bridgeport -- consented to a search of his vehicle, which revealed a digital scale, police said.

While police were surveying the accident, a friend of Gabriel's arrived to help out. Officers spoke with the friend -- identified as Omar Valez, 22, of Jones Avenue in Bridgeport -- and detected the odor of burnt marijuana emanating from his vehicle, according to the report. A search of the vehicle revealed packaged marijuana and a large amount of cash in the car.

Valez was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and issued an infraction for possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana, according to police. He was held on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 9.

Meanwhile, Gabriel's car was towed, and police found 34 bags of heroin underneath the trunk, according to the report. Gabriel was charged with possession of narcotics, illegal sale of narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 9.
