Warning: Package Thief on the Loose in Fairfield

Residents are reporting a rash of mailbox and UPS/Fedex thefts in one Southport neighborhood.

Fairfield police to residents ordering holiday gifts to be delivered to the front door – don’t. Arrange to have your packages delivered elsewhere -- one resident has had three packages stolen on three separate days, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier.

A Village Lane resident reported over that packages were taken from her doorstep on Dec. 5, Dec. 8, and Dec. 9, Lussier said.

A fellow Southport resident contacted Patch to report the incidents, as well as other thefts from mailboxes, and confirmed with police that the occurrences are being investigated and extra patrols have been assigned to the area.

The resident said there have been several reports in the Southport-Mill Hill neighborhood of a suspicious maroon Ford Explorer operated by a woman with short blonde hair who has reportedly been spotted walking around the neighborhood with a blue backpack.

Lussier reiterated that residents can arrange to have UPS and other delivery services bring packages to a destination other than the front door (for example, to the receiver’s place of work). Otherwise packages can be picked up from the nearest UPS/Fedex store.

I dont understand why UPS drops off packages without ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door. Isnt that part of "delivering?" The delivery agents need to take some of the responsibility here as well.

Mind you, I do not work for UPS. They usually knock. One cannot blame the driver of UPS. They are trying to get the most packages out as possible during this busy season! I think they are working quite hard to please most. Also, if the package is not a sign for delivery p/u, they are doing nothing wrong. Blame the right people... the crooks!

UPS is well aware that there is a criminal problem. I do not think it is asking too much for them to knock on the door or ring the doorbell after dropping the package on my doorstep.

Yeah because it is so hard for you to hear the sound of the UPS truck pulling up to your house....I hear them a block away in my neighborhood.

That's great for you. I think you live under a bridge, right?

UPS never knocks, rings the doorbell or even comes to my front door. They leave packages at the garage. I'm not happy about it, but don't know what I can do.

Make alternate arrangements????? Tell the shipper not to leave the package unless it is signed for????
