A vigilant gymgoer and the quick action of Fairfield firefighters kept a large fire from spreading into a warehouse on lower Black Rock Turnpike Monday night.
The fire, which was reported just before 10 p.m. by a member of Planet Fitness, was located in an alley between Tumble Gym and the former Schrier Brothers Paper Co. building.
"Fairfield Firefighters arrived and confirmed a large outside fire with flames impinging on the building," the incident report states. "Engine and Ladder 2, under the direction of Lt. Dennis Eannotti, cut the lock on the gate, gained access, then quickly extinguished the fire."
"Engine and Ladder 1, under the direction of Lt. Robert Smith, entered the large warehouse building, checked for extension, and performed overhaul operations."
According to the report from Assistant Chief George Gomola, Fairfield Police made contact with a worker, who stated that welding operations had just been concluded in the area of the fire.
"Employees of CT Dismantling had been using cutting torches to remove steel pipes in the area of origin. Metal slag consistent with welding debris was found in the area," the report states.
The last fire unit left the scene at 10:41 p.m.
