Connecticut Veterans Commissioner Honored by Jewish War Vets

At its 2013 National Convention in Richmond, Va., the Jewish War Veterans of the USA unanimously conferred a Life Honorary Membership to Dr. Linda S. Schwartz, Connecticut Commissioner of Veterans Affairs. This was in recognition and appreciation of her lifetime of dedication and service to all veterans and their families.

Among her many awards and accomplishments, Commissioner Schwartz’s remarkable career includes that of Air Force Flight Nurse, educator, administrator, and Connecticut Commissioner of Veterans Affairs since 2003 under three governors. She was the first female president of the National Association of State Commissioners of Veterans Affairs, and recently was nominated by President Obama to be Assistant Secretary of the National Department of Veterans Affairs for Policy and Planning.

Her education includes a Nursing Diploma from St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, Oh., Flight Nurse School at Brooks Air Force Base, Tx., Bachelors degree (Cum Laude) from the University of Maryland, Master of Nursing from Yale University School of Nursing, and a Ph.D in Public Health from Yale University School of Medicine.

It is believed that Commissioner Schwartz is only the third recipient of the Life Honorary Membership in the 118-year history of the Jewish War Veterans. The first was General of the Army Omar Bradley.

Established in 1896, The Jewish War Veterans of the USA is the oldest continuously active Veterans Service Organization in the nation.
