Court Hearing Tuesday on Girls' Little League Field

Town and Neighborhood Attorneys to Argue Whether a Temporary Restraining Order Should be Granted; Town Won't Restart Work on Project Until Judge's Ruling

The town's controversial plan to build a girls' Little League on Hoyden's Lane heads to a hearing in Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday.

Town Attorney Richard Saxl said Friday that a hearing on neighborhood opponents' request for a temporary restraining order was scheduled for 10 a.m. He said work on creating the field, which also includes infrastructure for a park, had been halted in mid-May out of courtesy to the court and wouldn't start up again until a judge rules on the opponents' request.

Saxl couldn't say how long that might take, saying he's been waiting on a ruling for a temporary restraining order in another case for more than a month.

Trees on the 9.42-acre property at 520 Hoyden's Lane have been cut down but a house remains standing. The house has to be demolished for the project because the girls' Little League field would be placed in the center of the town-owned property.

Town officials said the field might be ready for play in late spring of 2012 if work resumed this fall and the weather cooperated.

Supporters of the girls' Little League field have said the girls deserve a dedicated field of their own, noting that boys' Little League teams have two such fields - one at Mill Hill School and another in Tunxis Hill, with plans moving forward to convert fields in Gould Manor Park to Little League specifications.

Hoyden's Hill residents contend the Little League field will bring too much traffic to narrow and winding roads in a rural part of town and damage or destroy habitat for wildlife and rare birds. They also believe the town intends to put additional athletic fields on the property.
