Voter Turnout Light but 'Steady' for Primaries

The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Poll workers at Fairfield's District 10 polling place -- for today, the Fairfield Museum and History Center -- said that while voter turnout may be light so far, there's been a "steady flow."

Volunteers overseeing Republican voters said that, as of 2 p.m., approximately 170 of the 1,073 Republican voters in District 10 had cast ballots -- that's about 16 percent of residents eligible to vote in that primary.

Republican Registrar Roger Autuori's official count of ballots cast was last updated at 11 a.m. He said 889 of the town's 10,372 registered Republicans had voted, or 8.5 percent.

Democratic Registrar Matt Waggner did not have an official count as of 2 p.m.

Registered Democrats and Republicans in Fairfield have the chance to decide on candidates for U.S. Senate and the 132nd District in today's Connecticut primaries.

Locally, voters will decide on who will be the Democratic candidate for the state's 132nd District -- Board of Education member or newcomer . Whoever receives the most votes today will go on to challenge Republican incumbent Brenda Kupchick in November.

Both the Democratic and Republic candidates for the U.S. Senate will also be voted on in these primaries. Republican voters will bolster either former Congressman or to seek the party's nomination to replace retiring Senator Joe Lieberman. Democrats will choose between and former Secretary of State .

As of Monday, there are 9,866 registered Democrats in Fairfield and 10,372 registered Republicans. Democratic Registrar of Voters Matt Waggner said, historically, about 25 percent of these voters turn out for the primaries.
