Fairfield School Board Postpones Vote on MOU

Proposed memorandum of understanding would dictate the amount of money the school system and town each contribute to the employees' health insurance reserve fund.

The Fairfield Board of Education on Tuesday again postponed its vote on a proposed memorandum of understanding that would dictate the amount of money the school system and town each contribute to the employees' health insurance reserve fund.

The school board postponed its original vote on the MOU last month due to “conflicting and ambiguous language,” according to a report in the CT Post.

School and Town officials, along with town attorneys, worked for the past several weeks to redraft the MOU — however at Tuesday’s meeting, some Board of Education members reportedly said they still had problems with the wording — for example, one board member said she was concerned that the document didn’t include a clause allowing for the agreement be rescinded by either party at any time, according to the report.

Some board members have reportedly questioned whether the MOU is necessary, considering the board could direct the Superintendent of Schools as to how to handle contributions.

The MOU is requested by so that there is an agreement in place as to how the school district and the Town will share responsibility for replenishing the reserve fund. Tetreau reportedly claims that the MOU is needed to help safeguard the Town’s AAA credit status, as rated by Moody’s, as it will clearly define contributions for the coming years.
