Flatto's Vacation Pay Totals Nearly $30K

Former First Selectman Took Max of 60 Days of Unused Vacation Upon Leaving Office After Nearly 10 Years

Former First Selectman Ken Flatto, who resigned May 3 to take a job in Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's administration, received nearly $30,000 for unused vacation days, according to town Human Resources Director Mary Carroll-Mirylees.

Flatto was entitled to, and took, as pay a maximum of 60 unused vacation days, which totaled $29,446.15, Carroll-Mirylees said Monday afternoon. "You're allowed to bank up to 60 days paid," she said.

Flatto's unused vacation days accrued from November 2001, when he defeated former First Selectman John G. Metsopoulos in a rematch of a 1999 election that Metsopoulos won, to May 3, 2011, when Flatto left office. The first selectman is entitled to 20 days of vacation per year, and he or she doesn't receive compensatory time or overtime for attending night meetings, Carroll-Mirylees said. Carroll-Mirylees said the four weeks of vacation a year also apply to longtime mid-managers and town department heads.

Carroll-Mirylees said Flatto lost vacation days during his nine and-a-half years as first selectman from November 2001 to May 3, 2011 because he didn't take days off.

Flatto also served as first selectman from 1997 to 1999, and he served as a selectman, which is a part-time position, from 1995 to 1997 and from 1999 to 2001.
