Gov. Dannel Malloy requested a major disaster declaration on Friday from President Barack Obama in response to the last month's rare snowstorm, which caused

“This aid would provide additional help to municipalities, state agencies, and certain eligible non-profit organizations that were severely impacted by the historic October snowstorm,” Malloy said in a statement. “I am hopeful that President Obama will act quickly on my request.”

The declaration was sent after FEMA and the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) confirmed that expenses for debris removal and damage restoration — estimated at over $27 million — met FEMA's established thresholds in seven of the states eight counties.

New London County did not meet FEMA's thresholds for a major declaration, but municipalities in the county are still eligible for federal financial assistance for up to 72 hours of debris removal and emergency protective measures.
