Letter: Voters in 133rd District Have 'Easy Choice This Year'

RTM member Ruth Smey, D-5, supports Democratic candidate Kim Fawcett to represent Connecticut's 133rd District in Hartford.

To the Editor:

Voters in Fairfield’s 133rd Legislative District have an incredibly easy choice this year: the radical, right-wing politics of Chris DeSanctis or Rep. Kim Fawcett’s moderate, bipartisan approach to fiscal responsibility, improving education and growing jobs. DeSanctis’s signing of the extreme Grover Norquist pledge is a red flag for voters who want to see legislators in both parties work together for the common good. Kim Fawcett is known for her bold, independent legislative approach as our voice in Hartford successfully advocating for our public schools and transportation needs.

Chris DeSanctis, wants to cut funding from the State for Special Education, in our public schools, to break the teachers union and have the State control  their pension plans and he does not support funding to improve our public transportation system that will ease the commuter problems we presently have in the State of Connecticut.

My vote is for Kim Fawcett on November 6.

Ruth - CT is on the doorstep of bankruptcy. There's no more "other people's money" left for your programs and social-engineering pipe-dreams. There's no more money and your party, from the governor on down, refuses to recognize this reality. We're the highest taxed state in the nation, and a candidate who pledges not to tax us any further is what we need - not a Kim Fawcett who denies reality. Newsflash - there's nothing "extreme" about cutting out-of-control spending and balancing a budget. Chris DeSanctis seeks more choice and teacher accountability in the school system. Your entire characterization of his position on education is a falsehood, and a pathetic defense and obfuscation of Kim Fawcett's very poor attendance record at her committee hearings. You could at least be truthful in your criticisms. You are correct about one thing - the choice this year in the 133rd is clear. Vote for and elect Chris DeSanctis to bring some sanity and reason to a CT Assembly spending the state into bankruptcy.

". . . .moderate, bipartisan approach to fiscal responsibility, improving education and growing jobs" Oh, please! This state is an economic disaster thanks to ongoing one party rule. And while Rep. Fawcett doesn't show up in Hartford for the legislative grunt work she makes sure she scurries up I-91 to vote as directed by party leadership.

Ruth Smey's letter merely provides further proof of the desperation of her candidate, Kim Fawcett, who has failed to explain to Fairfield voters: (a) why she has been more concerned about reducing dependence on plastic bags than about solving Connecticut’s serious fiscal and competitive problems; (b) why she shows up for less than half of her committee meetings and public hearings in Hartford; (c) why she is rated as one of the worst legislators (142/151) by an independent, non-partisan organization (www.ctmedian.com) based on its Political Accountability Data scores; and (d) how she can claim to be independent when she votes 98% of the time with her party. With endorsements from respected Fairfield public servants like John McKinney, Tony Hwang, Brenda Kupchick, Tom Flynn, Kevin Kiley, and many others, Chris DeSanctis is quite obviously not a “radical, right-wing” candidate, nor has he ever advocated “to cut funding from the State for Special Education, in [sic] our public schools, to break the teachers [sic] union and have the State control their pension plans [BTW, the State already controls teacher pension plans],” nor has he ever opposed “funding to improve our public transportation system.” See instead Chris' recent op-ed @: http://fairfield.patch.com/blog_posts/move-along-fairfield-voters-nothing-to-see-here-really. Accordingly, the only point on which we can all agree with Ruth Smey is that “voters have an incredibly easy choice this year.”

"Chris DeSanctis is quite obviously not a "radical, right-wing" candidate," All the endorsements you listed were from elected conservatives. Just saying...
