Letter: Women of Fairfield, It's Time to be Heard

Letter writer urges residents to take part in a rally in Hartford in late April.

Are you horrified at the latest encroachments on the rights and freedom of women in the US? Outraged that your access to birth control is under attack? Floored that some politicians are trying to enforce vaginal ultrasounds before abortions? Flabbergasted that employers can refuse to hire you because you use contraception? Starting to feel like we've taken a huge step backward in terms of women's advancement?

If you answered yes to even one of these questions, then please join me in Hartford on April 28.

Why is this so important to me? Back in the day, my mother had two choices for birth control: the rhythm method and condoms. I remember well her stories of her women friends in the 1940s-50s who did not have access to birth control or abortion. These poor, married women would literally throw themselves down the stairs or climb to high places and jump to try to self-abort and those were the lucky ones. Others attempted to self-abort with hangers or visited those back alley "doctors" and they unfortunately weren't so lucky.

I can’t imagine living like my mother had to back in the 50s with so little choice. I won’t stand idly by and watch our daughters or granddaughters have to choose between work or sex or worse yet, life and death.

Listen this isn't a Republican or Democratic issue anymore but an issue for all women...past, present and future!

So bring your daughters, invite your man, friends, and family members. You really have no choice but to go!
