Malloy: Federal Aid Approved for Farmers Affected By Irene

Farmers in eight Connecticut counties, including Fairfield, will be able to apply for federal aid to assist with crop damage caused by Irene.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack has granted Gov. Dannel Malloy's September 15 request for a disaster designation in Connecticut due to agricultural losses caused by Tropical Storm Irene, according to a statement released on Friday by Malloy's office

Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham Counties were designated as primary natural disaster areas by Vilsack, while Tolland County was named a contiguous disaster county.

Farmers in Fairfield County told Patch contributor Cathryn J. Prince last month about . “High winds like that tend to flatten everything," Neil Glucken, president of , told Patch. "But the even more worrisome aspect is it tends to spread disease around."
