Murphy, Himes Thank Southport Residents For Engagement in Post Office Debate

U.S. Postal Service cancels plans to reroute mail from the Southport Post Office to Commerce Drive center.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy and Congressman Jim Himes issued a statement today thanking Southport residents for their work in persuading the U.S. Postal Service to cancel plans to reroute mail from the Southport Post Office to the Commerce Drive center on the Bridgeport Border.

Last week, Murphy and Himes held a community meeting with the residents of Southport to hear their concerns regarding the proposed rerouting of mail deliveries.

The full joint statement by Murphy and Himes is as follows:

"We’'e pleased that the USPS has decided not to reroute mail from the Southport Post Office to the Commerce Drive Post Office. Last week, we spoke with dozens of residents in the Southport community who expressed concern that the proposed rerouting would delay mail delivery and compromise services. We were proud to take their feedback to the USPS and encourage it to keep this route intact. This feedback helped USPS recognize the importance of the post office to the community, and we commend the agency for responding to our concerns so quickly. The Southport community's work to keep this route alive is a great example of the power of advocacy and teamwork, and we thank the people of Southport for their engagement on this issue."

Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau told the Fairfield Daily Voice that the decision was good news for Southport.

"This is a major concession on the part of the postal service," Tetreau told the Fairfield Daily Voice. He also credited the federal delegation for helping to "put some of the pressure on at the federal level, which made them listen to what we’re saying."
