Pequot Library Petition Gets 1,000 Signatures in Less Than 24 Hours

Pequot Library Board of Trustees has filed an appeal for the town's $350,000 contribution to to be considered for restoration by the Representative Town Meeting on April 22.

In less than 24 hours, the "Save Pequot Library from Closing" online petition garnered more than 1,000 signatures in a display of public support .

“The petition was sent to library patrons at 4 p.m. Tuesday. We will be presenting the list to the RTM members," Executive Director Martha Gates Lord said. "With this support, Pequot Library has increased our goal to 5,000 signatures to Save Pequot Library from Closing!”

By 2 p.m. Wednesday, the petition had 1,053 signatures. By 10 p.m., there were 1,263.

First Selectman Michael Tetreau confirmed Wednesday that the Pequot Library Board of Trustees has filed an appeal for the town's $350,000 contribution to to be considered for restoration by the Representative Town Meeting on April 22.

At this time, Town Attorney Stanton Lesser believes the Board of Trustees has the standing in regards to the Town Charter to file an appeal, Tetreau. If that interpretation changes, Tetreau will file an appeal by Friday, the deadline.
