RTM Democrats: Nothing 'Bold' or 'Modern' About Plan with Less Districts

RTM Minority Leader Hal Schwartz, D-7, responds to the release issued Monday by Redistricting Committee Chairman Hank Ference, R-3.

[Editor's note: This statement from RTM Minority LEader Hal Schwartz, D-7, was sent in response to the press release issue by Hank Ferrence on Monday, April 15, 2013.]

We heartily agree with our colleagues that voters, today and always, are looking for leadership.

More than a year ago, the Democrats on the Redistricting Committee produced a 10-district map that complies with state and town requirements and is fair to both parties. Like our founding fathers, we believe leadership is best served by the most direct relationship of constituents to their representative.

There is nothing inherently "bold" or "modern" about a plan with fewer districts and fewer representatives if it dilutes the peoples' voice. In fact, James Madison wrote "Nothing can be more fallacious than to found our political calculations on arithmetical principles." The Democrats' plan clearly best serves what must be the top priority - the fair and adequate representation of Fairfield's citizens.

Far from inert, the RTM today is a vigorous, focused body, dealing with the complex issues of our Town. The State has charged us with one task and one task only - adjust our district lines, not their number, not the number of representatives. Our leadership and our members support this plan. It is time to get the job done.
