Snow Mountain Grows at Jennings Beach as DPW Clears Sight Lines

Hard to Believe McKinley School's Annual Carnival Will Take Place in Two Months in Beach Parking Lot

Town Department of Public Works' crews boosted Mother Nature's snow-removal efforts on Monday - and improved sight lines for motorists - by carting about nine dump trucks full of snow from around Fairfield streets to Jennings Beach's parking lot.

The mountain of snow in the parking lot appeared about 12 feet high and stretched back to The Sandcastle Playground in Henry Rowland Park.

But DPW and town recreation officials aren't worried, at least yet, that the mountain of snow will remain in the parking lot when McKinley School's carnival comes around on April 14.

DPW General Foreman George Kaczegowicz said DPW crews could push around the snow and break it up to encourage melting if it's still around in April. "Worse comes to worse, we'll move it from one side to the other. That shouldn't be a problem," he said.

But Kaczegowicz added that it would be a problem if snow falls on Fairfield all the way to April and the temperatures stay cold.

Town recreation officials said they're more worried about town golf courses and playing fields, noting that the mountain of snow in Jennings Beach's parking lot will get some encouragement to disappear due to a forecast of 60 degrees on Friday. The National Weather Service's latest forecast for Fairfield, updated at 2:45 p.m. Monday, calls for daytime highs to be significantly above freezing from Wednesday through Sunday.

On Monday, a crane pushed back snow toward The Sandcastle Playground as dump trucks brought in snow from Fairfield streets that had either hindered sight lines at intersections or caused roads to be too narrow, Kaczegowicz said.

The only other carnival scheduled in Jennings Beach's parking lot next spring is the Holy Family/Assumption School carnival from May 19 to 22.
