In this two part series, we're introducing you to two local residents using volunteering as a way to make new connections in their communities. Today's volunteer, Fairfield resident John.
John recently started volunteering with the Enchanted Castle in Fairfield helping the ladies move larger set pieces and decorations around. He even got his kids involved, too.
“I’ve been out of work in the financial sector for some time and I was just starting to think about getting into volunteering,” he said. “Here I am wondering how I can volunteer in Fairfield and a friend referred me to VolunteerSquare after her friend’s husband had used it successfully. It is such a great tool and I’m so glad I found it.”

“I was able to get a good sense of what’s out there and I happened to be free the weekend a local group needed some help,” he said. “I called them up, went down there and started volunteering right away. It was as easy as that.”
John says that part of the challenge that comes with unemployment is a feeling of isolation – being disconnected from the community. He says that his skills in the financial sector give him a unique value in a corporate environment breaking into the community was a bit more of a challenge. In volunteering John says he's found a way to make new relationships in his town and at the same time give back to a deserving cause he cares about.

“Now that I have the volunteer bug and a great resource in VolunteerSquare, I am definitely going to make service more of a regular part of my life,’’ he said. “In fact, I wish I had done this years ago.”
