Just about one year ago, the Northeast was slammed with one of the worst storms in recent memory courtesy of Superstorm Sandy. A few months later, we were hit with a whopper of a winter storm in Nemo. In the aftermath of both storms, we were flooded with calls from folks looking to help the affected areas along Connecticut’s shoreline – and beyond. Volunteers continue to be a critical element of the recovery efforts but theAmerican Red Cross needs your help throughout the year, not just in times of crisis.
“Our American Red Cross workforce is more than 96% volunteer. Without the help of volunteers, we could not fulfill our mission to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies,” said American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region CEO Mario Bruno.
Now, in the midst of hurricane season and ahead of winter, we are thrilled to announce a new partnership with our good friends at the Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross. On Saturday October 19th, we are hosting an unprecedented event here in Fairfield County – a free disaster response orientation at the Sono Field House in Norwalk.

Together with the American Red Cross, we hope to educate as many people as possible about how to prepare yourself, your home, your family and your neighborhood for a disaster. Plus, we want you to understand how you can volunteer with the American Red Cross not only after a disaster hits but before and during a crisis as well.

“By participating in this special program, people can learn how to better prepare themselves and their families for emergencies and how to help make their communities better, safer places to live by volunteering with the American Red Cross,” Bruno said.
The Red Cross has worked hard to make it easy for you by condensing a ton of useful information into 45 minute sessions that will run at various times from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 19th.
