Quick Center for the Arts presents National Theatre Live’s encore presentations of Alan Bennett’s “The Habit of Art,” starring Richard Griffiths, Alex Jennings, and Frances de la Tour. High Definition broadcasts take place at 2 p.m. (encore), and 7 p.m. (encore), on Thursday, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts. Tickets are $25, $20 seniors, $15 students/children.
Originally broadcast in 2010, Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play “The Habit of Art” returns to cinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. Benjamin Britten (Alex Jennings), sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, seeks advice from his formed collaborator and friend, W.H. Auden (Richard Griffiths). During this imagined meeting, their first in twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, among others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. “The Habit of Art” looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

This presentation offers a unique chance to see the late Richard Griffiths (“Harry Potter,” “The History Boys”) in a stage performance, joined by an incredibly strong cast including Alex Jennings (“The Queen,” “Untold Stories,” “My Fair Lady”), Frances de la Tour (“Harry Potter,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “The History Boys”), Adrian Scarborough and John Heffernan. “The Habit of Art” received 5 stars from the Daily Telegraph, which called it “another absolute cracker, often wonderfully and sometimes filthily funny, but also deeply and unexpectedly moving.” The Independent agreed: “Bennett the maestro returns with a multi-layered masterpiece.”

National Theatre Live is the National Theatre's groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage in High Definition to cinemas across the globe. National Theatre Live, launched in June 2009, currently reaches an audience of over 1.5 million people in 500 venues around the world. Each live broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, giving cinema audiences the 'best seat in the house' view of each production. This year’s schedule will also include a special broadcast on Nov. 17, 2013, celebrating National Theatre of Great Britain’s 50th anniversary.
