National Theatre Live in HD “National Theatre: 50 Years on Stage”

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Nov. 11, 2013). Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts presents National Theatre Live’s encore presentation in High Definition of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s 50th anniversary celebration “National Theatre: 50 Years on Stage.” The broadcast takes place at 3 p.m. (encore), on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts. Tickets are $25, $20 seniors, $15 students/children.

 

From “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” to “The History Boys,” from “Antony and Cleopatra” to “Angels in America,” from “Guys and Dolls” to “London Road,” National Theatre: 50 Years on Stage” (recorded November 2, 2013) consists of live performance and rare glimpses from the archive, featuring many of the most celebrated actors who have performed at the National Theatre over the past five decades and directed by Nicholas Hytner. From its early golden period under the leadership of Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic theatre to its now iconic building in the heart of London, the National Theatre has been home to Britain’s finest theatrical talent, premiering works by renowned writers such as Harold Pinter, Peter Shaffer, Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett and David Hare, and staging celebrated performances by Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, Michael Gambon and the rising stars of today.

The cast for the celebration includes Olivier Award winner Simon Russell Beale, Tony and Olivier Award winner Frances de la Tour, Tony and Academy Award winner Judi Dench, Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes, Olivier Award winner Michael Gambon, Tony and Olivier Award winner Derek Jacobi, Olivier Award winner Alex Jennings, Olivier Award winner Rory Kinnear, Olivier Award winner Adrian Lester, BAFTA award winner Anna Maxwell Martin, Olivier Award winner Andrew Scott, Academy, Tony and Olivier Award winner Maggie Smith, and Olivier Award nominee Penelope Wilton.

National Theatre Live is the National Theatre's groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre live from the London stage in High Definition to cinemas across the globe. National Theatre Live, launched in June 2009, currently reaches an audience of over 1.5 million people in 500 venues around the world. Each live broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, giving cinema audiences the 'best seat in the house' view of each production.
