Our Intern Rachel Discovers The Fairfield Museum and History Center

Our intern Rachel explores Fairfield.

I sent our intern Rachel out to explore Fairfield and report back to us what she discovered. The first place she found is The Fairfield Museum & History Center.  I think she did a beautiful job explaining what the center is and what they do there.  Stay tuned for more Rachel posts!

The Fairfield Historical Society was founded in 1903 and until 2007 it was located on Reef Road. In 2007 a new building was created, now referred to as The Fairfield Museum and History Center. The new mission of this program is to create a community center in our town and county. Whereas the Historical Society focused on just the history of Fairfield, the new facility focuses on Fairfield County as a whole .The Fairfield Museum and History Center building was designed by a local architect and is now located across the street at 370 Beach Road. The Museum is run by six full time employees and is managed by a board of directors. The facility also depends on help from local volunteers. Local volunteers are able to serve as tour guides or as help in the Museum’s office. The History Center encourages anyone willing and interested in preserving our county’s history to become a volunteer.

The Fairfield Museum and History Center is truly a place for all members of our county to learn and explore our surroundings. There are programs for kids and adults, as well as for teachers and their students. Now with the Museum’s mission to reach a more regional audience, they urge school districts from all over the county to come and visit. The Museum has so much to offer. It holds an archive that consists of documents such as church records, historic family papers, and different organizations’, such as the Red Cross, records. The Museum also has all sorts of artifacts–from furniture to toys to clothing. The Museum recently held two very interesting exhibits. One focused on the history of theatre in our county and the other focused on the history of baseball in primarily Fairfield and Bridgeport. Until July 22, the museum is hosting a photography exhibition featuring the images of Charles Ruger and local photographers.

The Museum also administers and manages some of the town-owned properties such as the Sun Tavern, the Victorian Cottage, the Burr Mansion, and the Ogden House. The Ogden House hosts tours starting on June 3rd and continues during weekends over the summer. The other houses offer more of a guided, walking tour. The Museum’s goal is for the other buildings to be opened for the public to be able to step inside and view the homes’ interiors. The Museum also hopes to create podcasts to help guide the tours as well.

The Museum truly expands itself to be our community center. Members of our community are able to rent out rooms in the museums for meetings, lectures, book discussions, and parties. The Fairfield Museum and Historical Center is a pivotal part of our community. It is an educational exploration and adventure. I can personally promise that by visiting the museum, you will be amazed by what you see. You will definitely be able to learn something new about your county and feel a sense of pride in your hometown.  The Fairfield Museum and Historical Center is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM to 4 PM. For all members it is free, adult tickets are $5 and student and senior tickets are $3. All children under 5 are able to go for free.
